USATT LEAGUE of the Month - Nov/Dec 2005

AGTTA: Atlanta Georgia Table Tennis Association League

By Ralph Presley

AGTTA is a publicly sponsored Table Tennis Club located at Chastain Park and is a fun table tennis club for all ages in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia. The Club was established in 1960. We have more than 14 tables and about 60 players, with a 10-week club league every Tuesday night.

September 13 marks the end of the 2005 Summer League. The League finished its tenth week of competition, and competition it was. When you visit Chastain Park, you better bring your “A” game!

The format consists of a four-player round robin with the winner of the table advancing to the next higher table the next week. What makes the League so special? The League does not use the Snake System. The League places four players on the table by rating. One week, the top table consisted of five of the top players in Georgia, Lee McCool (2341), Bobby Tan (2315), Bong Geun Kim (2267), Preston Chin (2127) and Aldis Presley (2070). The final results was a five-way tie, with each finishing at 2-2.

Each week, each match, each table is tough. We have about 12 tables for match play each week. The top five tables consistently have players rated over 2000. All matches are best three of five to 11 point games.  The Champions of the five Divisions (U-500, U-1000, U-1500, U-2000, and Open Division) are crowned at the end of each Session. The winner is determined by won/lost percentage.

The Spring League, which concluded June 29, 2005, crowned its Division Champions. The Open Champion was Soheil Zolfonooh. Under 2000 had co-Champions, Arekel Movsesyan and Blair Wilson. The U-1500 Champion was Phillip Garrett. The U-1000 Champion was Joy Hembree, who is also the current Georgia State Women’s Champion. The U-500 event was won by Nina Lavene.

The AGTTA annual membership fee is $50, with a weekly League fee of $3. The Club has open play on Thursday Nights and Sunday mornings at no additional cost.

If you are in Atlanta, come by the Club for some good play. First time visitors play at no cost. For more information, see our web site at www.AGTTA.com.
